A Castle in Calistoga

When we packed the tandem bicycle and a picnic for a spring day of riding in Calistoga, we didn't anticipate rain. Most of the shops, spas and restaurants in Calistoga are on or near, Lincoln Avenue, the main street. George at the visitor information center is equipped with flyers and a gentle smile to help out-of-towners enjoy a good day in the area. Here we learn that the best deal for access to mineral pools is at the Calistoga Spa Hot Srings which offers a soak for ten dollars after 7 PM. Copperfield's Bookshop is an independent bookstore with a large selection of books to guide a tour of food and wine through Napa. Calistoga Bike Shop provides clearly-marked bike maps of the area from Calistoga's bike coalition, worth getting for a sunnier day, and echoing the wellness focus of the town, Mudd Hens sells divinely fragranced bath salts and soothing products. The shop keeper at Mudd Hens recounts her tour and tasting at Castello di Amoroso, recommending the trip, and off we go.

So instead of biking and picnicking during our time in this town of wineries and hot springs, we visited the Castello di Amoroso, a spectacular castle on a hill overlooking vineyards in Napa. Hand-built over 14 years, the structure is a re-creation of an Italian medieval castle with colorful fresco murals and brickwork.
