Spring Has Sprung in Bolinas

No signs on Highway 1 point toward Bolinas. Regardless, Kennedy and I land in this reclusive hippie community for the day, spending time at the beach to mark the start of spring. Driving through the short main street of the town we pass a laundromat, library, community center, gallery, food co-op, board shop, convenience store, a saloon and the Coast Cafe where we meet friends for a meal. With sunny outdoor tables and colorful painted buoys decorating the walls, this is the place to be for a bustling Sunday brunch. I choose the seasonal scramble with garlic, mushrooms, fennel and parmesan. Hand painted signs nearby designate a community bulletin board, a community collage board and a colorful mosaic outdoor altar.

The coastal cliffs are dotted with lavender and canary flowers sprouting from the dry earth. Surfers, dogs and picnickers line the sparkling and sunny beach. The pace is slow, the ocean lulling and I make drip sand castles with the daughter of our friends. Bolinas is a magical nook of Marin, a beautiful place where our friends gather today to enjoy nature, relaxation, conversation, food and wine.

As we leave the beach the local buzz surrounds a boy who catches a stingray. Wood is arranged for beach bonfires. Driving home we spot seals are lined up on the shallow sand bar. With windows rolled down we can smell the eucalyptus along Highway 1 and watch the sun get low.
